How do we recognise metabolic syndrome?

  1. Abdominal obesity: If the waist circumference above the belly button is greater than 94 cm in men or greater than 80 cm in women.
  2. At least two of the following factors:
  • High blood pressure: 130/85 mm Hg or already on medication to lower blood pressure;
  • High triglycerides: 1.7 mmol/l or more;
  • Low ‘good’ HDL cholesterol: 1.0 mmol/l or lower in men; 1.3 mmol/l or lower in women;
  • High blood sugar on an empty stomach: 5.6 mmol/l or higher; or already on medication for type 2 diabetes.

The risk of metabolic syndrome is higher in people who are under a lot of stress, don’t exercise regularly, eat inadequately and irregularly, and don’t get enough sleep.
