Vineyard Estate
The Estate Through Time
The Krka Vineyard Estate, located on Trška Gora, has undergone many changes over the centuries. Dating back to the 19th century, it was first purchased by the lawyer Josef Suppan, and later passed into the hands of other owners, including the successful merchant Karel Pollack. Its most significant transformation came under the Remec family, who commissioned Slovenia’s most renowned architect, Jože Plečnik, to expand and modernise the vineyard cottage. In the second half of the 20th century, Ivan and Vida Rataj developed the estate into one of the largest and most advanced vineyards in the Dolenjska region. In 1977, the pharmaceutical company Krka acquired the estate, restored the vineyard cottage, named it Krkin hram, and continued its tradition of hospitality. Today, the Krka Vineyard Estate stands as an important piece of cultural and historical heritage, linking past and present while offering guests a truly unique experience.

Renovated in 2024
And what about today?
The Krka Vineyard Estate was thoroughly renovated in 2024. The thatched roofs of both buildings – a defining feature of their architectural character – were replaced. The interiors and façades were also refurbished, and the restaurant terrace and surrounding grounds were beautifully landscaped.

The History of the Krka Vineyard Estate
The Krka Vineyard Estate dates back to the early 19th century, when it was purchased in 1859 by Dr Josef Suppan – a lawyer and notary in Novo mesto, a representative of Lower Carniolan towns in the Carniolan Provincial Assembly, later the mayor of Ljubljana and a member of the National Assembly in Vienna. Renovations from his period are marked by the year 1860 engraved on the stone entrance portal.
In 1916, the estate was acquired by the successful merchant and industrialist Karel Pollack, who carried out a major renovation. In 1917, he added a wine press room with a concrete portal.
In 1928, Vladimir and Helena Remec purchased the vineyard cottage. That same year, they had both the main house and annex renovated and extended to their current size. The works were carried out according to plans by Jože Plečnik, who recommended that the roofs be thatched so the buildings would “blend more harmoniously with the local surroundings.” In that same year, the property was fitted with running water, sewerage and electricity.
In the mid-1930s, the estate was purchased by Ivan Rataj, a graduate engineer of agronomy and viticulture expert from Mačkovec. In 1935, his wife Vida and daughter Meta moved there from Ljubljana. As Ivan’s work at the provincial committee in Ljubljana often kept him away, Vida – a teacher by profession – ran the household and managed the estate.
Under her guidance, the vineyard became the largest on Trška Gora, planted with noble grape varieties and maintained using the most advanced viticultural and winemaking methods of the time. It was also the first in the Dolenjska region to grow the Portuguese grape variety.
Vida Rataj opened a traditional wine room on the estate, where visitors could buy and drink local wine. It became a well-known Sunday gathering spot for many of Novo mesto’s prominent residents. Ivan Rataj passed away shortly after the Second World War, but Vida continued to care for the estate until 1977, when she sold it to the pharmaceutical company Krka. The company restored the vineyard cottage, named it Krkin hram, and has since continued its hospitality activities under the name Krka Vineyard Estate.
