Where to go?

The Strunjan Landscape Park, Istrian landmarks, and panoramic sea views: Talaso Strunjan is a great base for walks both long and short.

Strunjan

Thanks to its exceptional location and natural environment, Strunjan is one of the most idyllic locales on the Slovenian coast. Its mild climate, salt water, seaside lagoon, and wide range of tourist attractions are just a few of the reasons why  holidaymakers looking for both relaxation and excitement keep coming back to Strunjan.

The Talaso Strunjan Landscape Park

More than 270 bird species live in the landscape park, which includes the only sea lagoon on the Slovenian coast, Stjuža. That makes the park a unique mix of habitats for both plants and animals. The park’s biggest attraction is the Strunjan cliff, a precipitous 80 metre rock face whose geologic structure means it’s constantly changing. The park also includes the Strunjan Salt Pans – the northernmost salt pans in the Mediterranean where salt is still made in the traditional way.

Sečovlje Salina Nature Park

This protected sedimentary landscape will enchant you its saltpans and terrace agriculture, which have always been characteristic of the Mediterranean world. Take a stroll along pine tree-line lanes, swim in the lagoon, and discover other natural and cultural sights.

Museum of salt production in Sečovlje

The abandoned part of the Sečovlje salt pans – called the Fontanigge - offers an unforgettable introduction to the tradition of salt-making, as well as excellent birdwatching opportunities. The whole area has been declared a landscape park and includes a salt house with a museum collection, a complex salt extraction system, and salt pans with the remains of more than 100 salt houses.

Istrian countryside

Slovenian Istria surprises many visitors with its rich offer. The rural areas around Koper, Izola, and Piran offers you numerous vantage points, friendly villages, vineyards and hills decorated with churches. Take the cultural heritage route and try some authentic Istrian dishes.

Šavrinija

The hilly landscape of Šavrinija stretches between Črni Kal and the sea, inviting you to wander through olive groves and vineyards. Particularly interesting is the village of Krkavče, which is built into the bedrock itself. Take a stroll along the paths that Šavrinija natives walked until the end of World War II, when financial problems forced them to go Trieste to sell their produce.

Izola

Lovers of Mediterranean romance will be pleasantly surprised by this small but lively seaside town. As its name suggests, the town used to be on an island. In Izola – a town shaped by fishing and winemaking traditions –cultural history today is intertwined with numerous sports and entertainment activities.

Piran

Upon arriving in Piran – the best-preserved cultural monument on the Slovenian coast – you will have the feeling that you’re walking into a fairy tale. The town invites you to get lost in its medieval streets, stroll through its bustling little squares and visit one of its many architectural pearls. Take a swim on Punta, enjoy a coffee with a picture-perfect view, and breathe in the scents of the sea and the past.

Koper

Slovenia's largest and most important seaside town, Koper offers many cultural and historical monuments, including well- preserved palaces and charming squares, as well as natural landmarks. With its diverse programme of cultural, entertainment, and gastronomic events and extensive shopping opportunities, Koper also caters to the most demanding visitors.

Venice

For a longer trip we suggest Venice, which is only two hours away from Strunjan. The canals, bridges and vibrant Venetian atmosphere enchant everyone who sets foot in the city. The old Venetian capital is also a centre for cultural events, with the famous Venetian Carnival taking place every year.

Portorož

Portorož is where daytime entertainment, nightlife, and a well-developed tourism offer with a centuries-old tradition all come together. While on the coast, get to know the Sečovlje salt pans and the marina, take a swim in a pool or the sea, or choose one of the plentiful sporting and entertainment activities available. Your visit to Portorož will be complete when you indulge in Mediterranean cuisine at one of the coastal restaurants boasting a stunning sea view.

Vilenica pri Divači

The first cave in Europe open to tourists, Vilenica pri Divači has been known since the 17th century. Once an inspiration for songs and tales of magic, today cave’s ballroom hosts the final event of the annual Vilenica International Literary Festival. Come and see for yourself that fairies really do live here.

Hrastovlje and the Church of the Holy Trinity

Visit a church with a unique work of art that Slovenes are especially proud of. Behind its medieval stone walls, the Church of the Holy Trinity hides a fresco of the Dance of Death, an incredible piece of art discovered under layers of wall plaster.

Postojna Cave

With a total length of 24 km, the Karst cave system promises an unforgettable adventure. For two million years, the world of stalactites, stalagmites, and rare cave animals was created by the Pivka River. It has been attracting visitors since the 13th century, and today it is the most visited cave in Europe. Don't forget to check out the nearby fairy-tale Predjama Castle.

Lipica

In a village indelibly linked with the Habsburg Monarchy, you’ll find one of the oldest stud farms in the world. On its guided tour, you’ll learn about the tradition of breeding the world-renowned Lipizzaner horses. Come face-to-face with these noble, graceful animals in a picturesque natural environment.

Miramar Castle

If you find yourself close to Trieste, perhaps on a little shopping excursion, stop by Miramar Castle. You will be rewarded with a magnificent architectural monument – a former 19th Habsburg residence in the 19th century, today a museum with a beautiful park with exotic plants and statues.
