Nature lovers will enjoy the circular 2.5-kilometre-long hiking trail along the rapids of Divji Potok Creek, also named the Hidden Pearl when the educational trail was created. The path is interesting for young children too.

Village of Krupa or village of Praprot near Semič

The source of the Krupa River is known as the most beautiful spring in Bela Krajina and one of the most picturesque in Slovenia. This is why it’s also a popular Instagram spot. The Krupa River springs from under a 30-metre-high cliff and flows into the Lahinja River after just 2.5 kilometres. At the mouth of the Krupa River, you can visit the medieval water castle Gradac.

Starting point in the village of Planina

Starting in the village of Planina, there’s a 45-minute trail leading to the mountain lodge on Mount Mirna. An easy hiking path leads past interesting marked points, playgrounds and karst phenomena. The lodge offers a wonderful view of the Bela Krajina region.

Gače – skiing in winter, hiking and cycling in summer

Intact nature between the Dolenjska and Bela Krajina regions, below the scenic peak of Pogorelec (965 metres above sea level). Gače has well-maintained skiing, cross-country skiing and sleighing trails, and an organised ski school. In summer, hiking trails are very popular, you can rent regular and electric bikes, while food and drinks are available at the weekends.

This circular nature trail has 12 stops, where you can explore natural and cultural sites such as the ruins of Rožek Castle, a Karst collapsed cave, a blowing cave, the Karst cave Jazbina, a river spring, an essential oil distillery, a liqueur and chocolate production.

At the wine cellar, you can taste and buy their special sparkling wine Poseidon, aged in the Adriatic Sea at a depth of 30 metres at a constant temperature of 12 to 13 degrees Celsius, as well as excellent wines. Tours of the wine cellar are available by prior reservation.

The upper part of the Lahinja River is rich in natural and cultural heritage - here you can find diverse flora and fauna, it’s also interesting from a cultural and historical point of view, because one of the few preserved prehistoric settlements in Europe, the village of Pusti Gradec, stands on the bend of the Lahinja River.

The starting point is at the hotel and under the main parking lot (by the campsite). 

Walking trails | from the picnic spot to the Krka River and Dolenje Polje, the Cvinger archaeological trail, the trail to the herb farm Plavica, the Toplice Circle. 

Trim trail | It is designed in a circular way through the forest, 1.2 kilometres long and has 10 stops to exercise. Follow the white-green markings. 

Running Trail Running for Health | It is 2.4 kilometres long and its design follows the Cooper Test. It runs through the forest and clearings with beautiful views.

On the left bank of the Krka River, you can explore the picturesque garden pavilion of Devil’s Tower and the ruins of the Soteska mansion (from the 17th century), an interesting collection of vintage cars (on request) and a 19th-century hydroelectric power station. Devil’s Tower is shaped like a four-leaf clover and is named after the story of the local nobles who used to throw debauched parties. On the right bank of the Krka River (about 550 metres from the bridge), you can see the remains of an old castle, which was badly damaged in the 15th century, and the remnants of a 19th-century sawmill.

The village of Kočevske Poljane is considered to be one of the oldest in the municipality of Dolenjske Toplice, dating back to the 15th century. The village is a protected monument, particularly for its ambitiously designed buildings of former inns and shops.

Base 20 is an important monument of Slovenian statehood. From April 1943 to December 1944, 26 wooden barracks in the middle of the Kočevje forests were the headquarters of the leaders of the Liberation Front of the Slovenian Nation. It is the only preserved secret headquarters of the leadership of any resistance movement in Europe. The role of Base 20 and the national liberation movement in this area is shown in an exhibition in the barracks no. 16 and 22.

This steam sawmill was built in 1894, which was connected with the construction of the Kočevje and Dolenjska railways, which made it possible to transport timber from Rog. Before the First World War, the sawmill employed around 400 workers and remained in operation until 1935. The renovated building on the site is now a scout house, while the remains of the sawmill and the railway are still evident. A guided visit is recommended.

In the museum, the Society of Native Gottschee Settlers, the Kočevje Germans, shows the history of the former inhabitants of the area, who settled here in the 14th century and emigrated massively during the Second World War. The descendants of those who stayed have preserved their medieval German to this day, forming one of the oldest German-speaking islands in the world.

Here, the gifts of nature are used to create delectably good liqueurs, gins and other spirits, as well as chocolates. You can taste delicious products on the restaurant terrace just above the turquoise spring of the Obrščica Creek or buy them as a gift. You can also try their wonderful desserts and refreshing drinks or visit their production site (by prior reservation).

Near the village of Prečna

A mysterious walking trail leading through the valley of the Temenica River is never crowded. Here you can see a cave, the remains of an old hydroelectric power station and of the 14th-century Luknja Castle, which was considered one of the most fortified castles in the Dolenjska region. It was owned by Erasmus of Rotterdam for some time. Climbing enthusiasts can also try their hand at natural climbing area.

Žužemberk, Dvor, Zagradec

The picturesque river weirs made of limestone create dams in the riverbed, which slow down the flow of the Krka River and allow for a rich life in and along the Krka River. From the riverbank you can admire fish, ducks, swans and – if you’re lucky – otters and beavers.

Vrhpeč 14

The Temenica River is a sinking river that comes to the surface for the second time near the village of Vrhpeč under a picturesque 35-metre-high cliff of Zijalo. In the cave, there is a stagnant lake, but when it rains heavily, the water bursts out of the lake. In the vicinity, there are two more caves named Fantovska Luknja and Ajdovska Jama. You will definitely enjoy beautiful intact nature.

A cultural and ethnological monument of local importance from the mid-18th century is designed as an open-air museum. It comprises a ground-floor, partly brick, partly wooden dwelling house with a traditional Slovenian black kitchen, a house, a chamber and a small room. A piggery, a granary, a well and floor are also preserved (book your visit: 051 520 721).

Trg 8 in Mirna Peč and Šentjurij

In Mirna Peč, you can enjoy a multimedia presentation of the life and work of Lojze Slak, who was a popular Slovenian virtuoso on the diatonic accordion, the founder of the band named Ansambel Lojzeta Slaka and a writer of songs and lyrics. In the nearby village of Šentjurij, you can see the memorial collection of the Slovenian poet Tone Pavček (book your visit: 07 30 78 120, muzej.mirnapec@siol.net).

The main square in Novo Mesto

The capital of the Dolenjska region is proud of its old, sensitively renovated town centre, surrounded by the Krka River. Here you can visit boutique shops, the market or a majestic cathedral church, stroll along the picturesque riverfront, enjoy evening events or have a drink in a pub. The Museum of Dolenjska tells the story of a heritage that puts Novo Mesto on the world map as one of the major Iron Age sites. The Rudolf’s Raft takes organised groups along the Krka River, accompanied by accordion music and excellent local wine – cviček.

Podstenice – Kunč

This impressive spruce grows at the bottom of a karst sinkhole below the abandoned Kočevje settlement of Kunč in the Kočevski Rog area. With a diameter of 1.50 metres, it is the second thickest spruce in Slovenia and it is more than 51 metres tall. To the north-west of Kunč, near the forest road, you can explore an ice cave too. This is a typical ice cave, as the air is cold and there are small amounts of ice all year round. According to a legend, it was in this cave where Veronika of Desenice, the second wife of Frederick II, Count of Celje, was arrested when she escaped from her persecutors. A guided tour is recommended.
