A dynamic hiking trail along the Slovenian coast.

The beautiful and picturesque Strunjan hiking trail

In Slovenian Istria, by the sea, the conditions for hiking and cycling are ideal all year round, bar the hottest summer days. Outdoor activities enthusiasts gravitate towards the sea in winter and early spring, when the mainland is still cold, snowy and foggy.

The trail is 12 kilometres long and takes around 3 hours from start to finish.

A scenic, well-marked circular trail

The route is circular. We recommend you start in Strunjan, where there is a large parking lot near the sea, between Talaso Strunjan and the beach. If you're not too early, you can treat yourself to a coffee (by the sea, in front of the Cavedin bar, or on the terrace of the Svoboda Hotel), then walk the path along the beach across the salt flats and turn towards Fiesa. The signposts by the lake will point you in the direction towards Portorož over the hill and then along the coast to the Auditorium.

The Valeta Tunnel and the Pinija restaurant

Return to Strunjan valley through the mysterious Valeta tunnel, through which the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway ran as recently as a hundred years ago but is now only intended for hikers and cyclists. Return to Strunjan through persimmon plantations and enjoy lunch at the Pinija restaurant, famous for authentic Neapolitan pizzas, Piran sea bass, Strunjan mussels and heavenly desserts. It is located right by the sea and offers a beautiful view of the Piran cape.

The trail to the Strunjan cross and the view of the Moon Bay

Once you've recuperated, continue on the trail. At the chapel near the Krka Laguna hotel, turn up the hill, to Vida's grove and the stone cross with strong energy points and a stunning view. Following the path above the cliff, the highest in the northern Adriatic, you will reach the spot above the most beautiful bay of the Slovenian coast – the Moon Bay. On a clear day, you can see the Julian and Carnic Alps and even the Dolomites and the outline of Venice. Return to the starting point by following the path to the right and through the village. Before you drive home, treat yourself to a jump in the sea and a refreshing drink at Talaso Strunjan beach.

Talaso Strunjan is also an excellent starting point for hiking along the coast, which is why a hiking week is organized here in April and November. It is a 5-day break for hiking enthusiasts, which includes 5 guided hikes along the Slovenian, Italian and Croatian coasts.
