Healing Marine Factors – Thalassotherapy
The word thalasso originates from the ancient Greek word for sea, and all the methods of our thalassotherapy for health and well-being likewise originate from the sea and the natural features of the coastal environment. For this purpose, we make use of seawater, the marine climate, marine mud, and salt.
Healing Effects of Seawater
Seawater is not only for pleasant refreshment on hot summer days. With its mechanical and chemical properties and temperature, it has a comprehensive positive effect on the body, further enhanced by the reflection of sunlight, especially ultraviolet rays. Heated seawater in our indoor pools ensures its balneological effects even during winter.
As in summer there is no better water than the clean sea, we invite you to the ecologically pristine Talaso Strunjan swimming area.
Swimming in the sea has a beneficial effect on rheumatic conditions and on back and muscle pain; it reduces inflammation, relaxes the body, and stimulates the elimination of excess fluid and harmful substances by promoting the function of organs such as the liver, kidneys, and skin. Toxins are thus transported toward the surface of the skin via the lymphatic system, while sea salt further accelerates their elimination.
Results of Seawater Analysis in Strunjan
| Characteristics of Seawater in Strunjan Bay | |
| Water temperature |
July and August: above 24 °C From September onwards: below 22 °C In winter: from 17 °C to 7 °C (February)
|
| Chemical analysis |
Slightly alkaline, with a pH value of 8.3. The water contains the highest concentrations of sodium cations (11,600 mg/l) and chloride anions (20,300 mg/l), which is characteristic of seawater. There are also significant amounts of magnesium (1,480 mg/l) and calcium (428 mg/l). Among the anions, sulfate concentration is high (1,100 mg/l), while other anions are present in much smaller amounts (together below 300 mg/l). The concentration of iodides is slightly elevated but well below the limit value of 50 mg/l. |
Marine Climate
The key factors of a pleasant marine climate are the sea, aerosols from the sea and Mediterranean vegetation, and small temperature fluctuations (both daily and annual).
The Strunjan microclimate has a positive effect in several respects: favorable temperatures (from 22 to 27 °C in summer, and rarely below 6 °C in winter), low precipitation, absence of fog, little summer sultriness, and low relative air humidity. The air in Strunjan is therefore particularly suitable for the treatment of respiratory diseases and for improving overall well-being, as it strengthens the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. It is also characterized by low concentrations of bacteria, allergens, and smoke, high values of the partial pressure of free oxygen, and relatively high concentrations of sodium, chlorine, bromine, and iodine.
With 2,300 hours of direct sunshine per year, Strunjan exceeds the international criteria for a health resort with a healing climate by more than 50%.
Winds also play an important role in Strunjan: in addition to moderate easterly and southwesterly winds, the bora wind occurs with greater intensity in winter and early spring, exerting a stimulating effect on asthma patients.
Sea Salt
The Landscape Park within Talaso Strunjan is renowned for its ancient salt pans, where salt is still produced using traditional methods. The locally produced sea salt is rich in minerals and represents a key ingredient in various therapeutic and cosmetic treatments.
Sea salt has a beneficial effect on all skin types and helps in the treatment of dermatitis, psoriasis, and various skin eczemas. As it acts as an antiseptic and an antihistamine, it also inhibits allergic reactions.
The therapeutic salt is obtained from the Sečovlje Salt Pans.
Marine Mud
Marine mud, or fango, forms in shallow bays at the meeting point of freshwater and seawater. In spa therapy, it is used in the form of wraps, as this is the most effective way for its beneficial physical and chemical properties to act on the body.
Fango mud is obtained from the Sečovlje Salt Pans.
The thermal effect of the wraps is achieved already at a temperature of 38 to 39 degrees Celsius. The mud retains heat very well—it releases it very slowly—allowing you to enjoy the pleasant warmth of the wrap for an extended period of time.
While you relax and enjoy the warmth of the wrap, the fango works intensively to benefit your body.
When applied to the skin, a mud wrap causes the dilation of blood vessels, improving circulation in the treated area. Muscle tension is reduced, connective tissue becomes more relaxed, and all of this has a pain-relieving effect. Internal organs also respond reflexively, which is particularly important for chronic inflammatory conditions. Wraps also promote the exfoliation of the upper layers of the skin, cleansing it and accelerating regeneration.
The chemical effect of the mud is due to the absorbed particles (iodine, cobalt, magnesium, nickel, iron, sulfur, and aluminum), which first act locally in the skin and then influence more distant vegetative centers.
